John "Jack" P. Laux


John "Jack" P. Laux, 90, Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, March 26, 1998 at Sleepy Eye.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with burial in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-9:30 Monday at O'Hare-Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. There will be a Knights of Columbus prayer rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

He is survived by his daughter,
Mavis, and son-in-law Robert Koktavy of LeSeuer;
three grandchildren;
a sister-in-law, Esther Laux of Sleepy Eye;
nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents,
his wife Millie on June 6, 1997,
six brothers and three sisters.

He was born May 21, 1907 in Vail Township, Redwood County, to Nick and Mary (Moelter) Laux.

He attended rural school and Wabasso Public School. In 1928, he left the farm to work on road construction and carpentry. In 1932, he came to Sleepy Eye to open Jack's Tire and Battery Shop. He married Mildred Hammond June 28, 1933 at St. Mary's Rectory. He later had an auto parts business covering Brown, Redwood, and Nicolett County area. After World War II he established his own construction business and built and remodeled many homes and farm buildings in the Sleepy Eye area. After retirement in 1975, he became an advocate for senior citizens. He was President of the Sleepy Eye Senior Club from 1976-1979, served on the Crown County Committee on Aging, the Region None Area Agency on Aging, the Legal Service Advisory Board (SMRL) and the Advisory Board for RSVP. In 1978-79 he and his wife Mildred traveled throughout Southern Minnesota establishing the Senior Federation, of which he was an officer and trustee. He served on the Building Committee and worked on the present Sleepy Eye Senior Citizen Center, was a member of the Sleepy Eye Community Education Advisory Committee, delivered meal-on-deals {should be meals-on-wheels} and volunteered at the Harkin's Store. In 1978 he was choosen {should be chosen} the Outstanding Senior of Brown County. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. In 1991 he was awarded the "Bishop's Medal of Service" by the Diocese of New Ulm.
