Pennsylvania State Monument
Birth: unknown
Death: unknown

Dedicated on September 27, 1910, the Pennsylvania Monument was erected as a memorial to the Pennsylvania officers and enlisted men who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. The largest among hundreds of monuments at Gettysburg National Military Park in Adams County, Pennsylvania, the monument is an imposing structure that stands 110 feet tall complete with a spiral staircase that leads to an observation deck. Situated at the center of the Union line where the Army of the North repulsed Pickett's Charge, the massive granite structure is one of the focal points of the battlefield park. The base is 80' square with a height of 9 feet adorned with bronze tablets bearing the names of 34,530 soldiers who fought and participated in the battle that lasted for three days from July 1st through July 3rd, 1863. Names of the generals are carved at the top and sculptures in their likeness are erected at the corners including George Meade, Winfield S. Hancock, and John Reynolds as well as Pennsylvania Governor Andrew G. Curtin and President Abraham Lincoln. The sculptures were completed by J. Otto Schweitzer, Cyrus E. Dalin, and Lee O. Lowrie and placed on the monument in 1913. The monument is topped by Samuel Murray's sculpture of the "Winged Victory." Pennsylvanians were instrumental in the major Union victory at the battle that is widely considered as the turning point in the war. 85 Pennsylvania regiments took part in the great battle representing a state that contributed over 400,000 men to the war effort. (bio by: K Guy)
