Death: Jan. 16, 1950

Professional Baseball Player, Manager, Scout. Rudolph Edward Hulswitt played Major League Baseball for 7 seasons. His big league debut was on June 16, 1899 with the Louisville Colonels when he was 22 years old. A career shortstop, he started for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1902 to 1904 and for the Cincinnati Reds in 1908. He also played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Known as a master of the "hidden ball" trick, he began and ended his professional career with the Danville, Illinois minor league baseball club. He played briefly with the Danville Tobacconists in 1899 before he was called up to play for Louisville, and was their manager in his final professional season in 1923 when the team was called the Leafs. His finest season came in 1902, when he had 135 hits and batted .272. After three years with Philadelphia, he was traded to the Columbus Senators of the American Association (minor leagues) in 1905. The team won their league's pennant with Hulswitt, despite his being arrested during a police raid on an illegal poker game involving several players. He made it back to the Majors with Cincinnati in 1908 and played the following two years with the St. Louis Cardinals. He managed seven different minor league teams from 1914 to 1923, and was a scout for several years until he became a Boston Red Sox coach from 1931 to 1933. In 1934, he became a talent scout for Robert Quinn and the Brooklyn Dodgers and worked for them for 14 years. During his playing career, he appeared in 644 games, had 564 hits, 203 RBI, and carried a lifetime .253 batting average. He retired from baseball and returned to his home in Kentucky where he died from a heart attack when he was 69 years old. (bio by: K Guy)
