Death of Jacob Abnet
The very sad and unexpected news reached the city Monday morning of the death of Commissioner Jacob Abnet. His friends here were under the misguided impression that he was recovering his health and so it seems were also his family and neighbors who have watched and cared fro him during his illness which now dates back some three months or longer. The news from his bedside was encouraging and everyone was hoping that he soon would regain and retain his old time vigor and strength. It seems that late Sunday afternoon a change for the worse took place and he rapidly sank into unconsciousness and death ensued. The deceased had spent the most of his life in Adams county
where he lived a modest upright and honorable life in strict accordance with bibliccal teachings. He succeeded in life and leaves behind hm a family that will always be an honor to his name and with them an inheritance of land and money that they may live in comfort the balance of their lives. Mr. Abnet
was first elected a member of the board of commissioners of Adams county in November 1900 taking his office January 1 1902. [Those dates really are over a year apart -- can you imagine having lame ducks around for over a year? Jody] During his two years on the board he has made an admirable official
true in every sense to his obligation as an officer of the county. At the late primary election he was renominated; thus showing the confidence and esteem in which he is held by the Adams county democracy and by all the citizens of the county as well. His death resulted from a complicaton [sic]
of liver and lung troubles which have been a serious strain upon his life since November last. During the early winter he spent two months in Florida hoping a change of climate would prove beneficial and at the time it was thought it had but the ravages of disease proved too strong a hold upon his phyical strength. The funeral services were donducted Tuesday, leaving the house at twelve o'clock. The services were held in the Methodist church at Berne with interment in the Crawford cemetery [sic], Rev. Aspy in charge. The deceased was fifty six years seven months and twenty four days old.
