SUV Crash Takes Life Of Woman
BLACKSHEAR — A Blackshear woman was killed early today when her SUV left the roadway and struck a tree on Georgia 203 in Pierce County.
Rose Griffin Johnson, 51, of Blackshear, died in the 5:16 a.m. single-vehicle accident, said GSP Trooper Ray Strickland.
Driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer, Johnson was northbound on Highway 203 when the vehicle crossed into the opposite lane for a distance of 53 feet and 4 inches before running onto the shoulder of the road.
Strickland said the vehicle then ran through a ditch for 86 feet and continued onto private property where the vehicle struck a bush.
The trooper said the SUV continued for another 14 feet before the front end collided with a tree in a yard. The vehicle rotated clockwise and continued for another 27 feet, coming to rest on private property facing southeast.
Strickland said he believes the woman died on impact. No other vehicles were involved, he said.

A Blackshear florist was killed in an accident on Georgia Highway 203 early Tuesday morning.
Rose Johnson, 51, died of injuries she received in the accident. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Pierce County Coroner Milton Harper.
Mrs. Johnson had owned and operated The Potting Shed Florist on Johnson Street in Blackshear for many years.
Details about the wreck are sketchy, but Trooper Ray Strickland of the Georgia State Patrol said the accident occurred on Georgia Highway 203 just past Buggy Trail in the Jot'Em Down community. Mrs. Johnson was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer north on Highway 203 when she apparently ran off the road and struck a tree. The accident is believed to have occurred about 12:15 a.m., but was not discovered until it was reported to Pierce County 911 by a passing motorist at about 5:16 a.m.
Harper said the accident scene was almost hidden from view from the roadway.
Friends and family members are coping with Mrs. Johnson's sudden death.
"It's a shock," says long-time friend Jerry Dixon. "It's just hard to believe."
Dixon says Mrs. Johnson's personality reflected her name.
"She was a rose and a very special person," he recalls. "She had a very giving heart."
Johnson was known as a talented florist and a faithful friend to all who knew her.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Johnson are pending and will be announced later by Pearson-Dial Funeral Home of Blackshear.
