John served in the Civil War from Ohio, joining up at age 17. He was a private in Company I(his gravestone says M), 12th Regiment Ohio Voluntary Army from October 13, 1863 to November 14, 1865. He was discharged at Nashville, Tennessee. John's first cousin John Ratcliff Emrich was also in the same company.

The 1870 Republican TS, Clay County, Kansas Census lists John Emrich, 24, living with is older brother George, 32, his wife Eliza, 23, and daughter Nora, 1. All were born in Ohio. John owns $800 worth of real estate.

Family lore states that John was a cowboy on the plains of Texas 1871-72, and was an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok. John moved to Kansas where he and his brother George homesteaded adjoining land in Clay County, Kansas. John's Land Patent June 7, 1877, lists several areas of Section 18 where George also has property.

In the 1880 Athelstane TS, Clay County, Kansas John Emrich, 34, is a single man living on his own.

John married Emilie Stemile January 30, 1881, Longford, Clay County, Kansas. They are the parents of five children listed below.

One of the most difficult events in the life of John's son George Emrich, was the day he escorted his elderly father to the train at Longford that would take him to the National Soldiers Home at Hampton, Virginia. George knew it was the last time he would see his father alive. His young daughter Pearl always remembered the tears on her father's face as he said goodbye.
