He was the son of Abijah and Emma Wolfinger Allyn. He grew up on a farm in Posey Co., graduated from Mt. Vernon High School, and earned a degree in Elementary Education at Indiana University, Bloomington. He taught school in Posey County for six years, then started an abstract business in Posey Co. He served as a First Sergeant in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne Division, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, Company B during World War II and fought in North Africa and Italy.
After being injured on June 7, 1944 during the Normandy invasion, he returned to the U.S. for OCS at Ft. Benning, GA. On December 16, 1944 he married Helen Felker of Evansville, Indiana, at St. John's Evangelical & Reformed Church (now St. John's United Church of Christ). After the war, he returned to Indiana University, Bloomington, where he earned a law degree in 1950. He returned to Mt. Vernon, Posey Co., IN and practiced law until his death in 1985. During those 35 years he was an active member Trinity United Church of Christ and many community, civic, and political organizations including the Republican Party, the Elks Lodge, the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce, the Posey County Bar Association, Kiwanis, the Greater Mt. Vernon Association, Sons of the American Revolution, the Mt. Vernon Library Board, and the Posey County Historical Society.
