Named for his grandfather, Josiah Clifton who fought with George Washington, Josiah Clifton Alspaugh was born 8th January in Forsyth County, NC, The eldest son of Henry Alspaugh, Jr., a methodist circuit rider . After his father's death in 1852 he moved to Burns in 1855 and married Zenah Austin. The log house of Zenah's parents, located on Highway 96, called "Lonesome," became Josiah and Zenah's after her father's death. On 25th May 1861 he enlisted in Captin William Thedford's Company K, 11th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He was with General Joseph E. Johnson, during his Georgia Campaign. General Hood through his campaign to Tennessee and back to NC, and with Johnson at surrender at Greensboro, Nc. He was not wounded, but contacted pneumonia, measles, astham and had a general breakdown, due to overheat, and was always kept on light duty. He applied for pension 16th January 1907. He died 22 December 1918 and was buried in the Austin-Alspaugh Cemetery.
