Roy E. Unruh, 83, passed away April 25, 2011, at Legacy Park, Peabody. He was born February 22, 1928, the son of Jacob E. and Hannah (Wedel) Unruh, Goessel, KS. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, bothers Paul, Howard, & Willard. He was survived by his wife of 60 years Arlene, Peabody, his children; Cynthia, Springdale, AR, Marilyn, Peabody, and Duane, McPherson; brother Harold Unruh and wife Joyce, Goessel, sisters Eleanora Goertzen, Goessel, Janet Kaufman and husband Roy; grandchildren Travis Unruh and wife Alicia, Wichita, and Larissa (Unruh) Johnson, McPherson; and 4 great-grandchildren. On August 17, 1950, Roy married Arlene Penner at First Mennonite Church, Hillsboro. They operated the Peabody Sausage House, Peabody, for 27 years, and later added Unruh Catering. Roy was always a hard worker, and worked on the family farm, for a custom harvester, a house mover, a grain elevator, the manager at Hillsboro Refrigerated Lockers, mowed lawns, and ran a road grader for Marion County Road & Bridge, a firefighter and later the Fire Chief for the Peabody Fire Dept. with over 30 years of volunteer service, a trustee, sang in the choir and in a quartet at the United Methodist Church, Peabody, and he was the chairman of the board at Peabody Memorial Nursing Home, now called Legacy Park. President of the Kansas Meat Processors Association, and school board member USD #410 Hillsboro. He served on the Peabody Chamber of Commerce, and helped with assembling fireworks for the Peabody 4th of July Fireworks shows. Roy and Arlene enjoyed many years of camping, fishing, and traveling around the country with friends. While camping, they spent many weekends with their grandkids, where Granddad taught them how to fish. Family will be available to receive friends from 6 – 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 29th, at the Peabody United Methodist Church, 403 N. Sycamore.
Memorials may be left for the Peabody United Methodist Church, the Peabody Fire Department, or the Peabody Senior Center, in care of Jost Funeral Home, 401 S. Washington, Hillsboro, KS 67063.
