George Heilman was born in Germany on Feb 28, 1867. He immigrated to the United States in 1890, settling in Chicago, IL. He served with the Illinois State Naval militia and was a veteran of the Spanish-American war. George married Bessie Gressang and the couple had three children: William Gressang, George Jr., and Florence LaVerne Heilman. His wfie Bessie and daughter Florence both died of TB in the 1920s. George Sr. remained in Chicago until about 1942, when he relocated to Miami.

George Heilman SR., Age 84, resident of 1755 N.W. 39th St. Passed away Sunday in a local hospital. Came here seven years ago from Chicago. Spanish-American war veteran. Survived by two sons, George jr., Miami, and William G., Chicago, and a sister Mrs. A.L. Rock., Ft Myers. Services will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Flagler chapel. Interment Flagler Memorial park.
