The resuce attempt of this whale and its family was featured in the 2012 movie Big Miracle starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski. The film was about the 1988 Operation Breakthrough attempt involving the United States, Soviet Union, The Inupiaq community and many more. The effort took two weeks before two of the three whales were freed from the ice at the northermost point in the United States to open water enabling them to swim south. The whales were given the following Inuit names: Putu, Siku, and Kanik and English names: Bonnet, Crossbeak, and Bone. The film changed their names to Fred, Wilma, and Bam Bam. The rescue attempt was believed to have cost over one million dollars. For further information, see the book, "Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World's Greatest Non-Event" by Tom Rose.
