He attended Hampden-Sydney College before going to the University of Virginia and then on to the University of the City of New York where he earned his medical degree in 1860. He came home to practice in Manchester. He enrolled in the cavalry on April 23rd, 1861. He served as Assistant Surgeon with various artillery companies. He married Nannie Gwathmey on March 22, 1864. He finished his military career as an Assistant Surgeon at Hugeneot Springs Hospital in Powhatan County, where he was paroled. He was a charter fellow of the Medical Society of Virginia. He practiced in Richmond and Henrico until he retired in 1920.
