Samuel Valentine Starnes was a son of Emsley Valentine Starnes/Stearns (1859-1920) and Nancy Jane Dulin (1862-1918). His paternal grandparents were Dulin Stearns (c.1836-1863) and Rusha Elizabeth King (1837-1894, later Mrs. A. Jackson Edwards), and his maternal grandparents were Milton Dulin and Sophia Weddington. He was a nephew of Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962) my great grandfather, who was buried at Elmwood Cemetery. See Dulin Stearns' listing on Find A Grave for more information on the family.

Sam was living with his family in York Co., SC in 1900, and in Charlotte in 1910 and 1920. He marred Lillie Costner (1904-1970, daughter of John D. and Nannie M. Costner). Thanks to my cousin Lois Self, I know they had at least one daughter, Nancy Margaret Starnes (1926-2004, Mrs. Deese).

Sam was a painter. They were living in Charlotte at the time of his death. He was killed in a conflagration resulting from the explosion of a coal stove.
