Duffield, Va. - S.Sgt. Charlie B. Upchurch has been officially reported by the U.S. War Department as "killed in action" somewhere in France, September 23. He had been in service of the armed forces for the past six years. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Upchurch, and son Charles E. Upchurch, make their home here. Other survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Upchurch of Duffield, Va.; four sisters, Mrs. James Roach of East Stone Gap, Va.; Mrs. Ray Bailey, Big Stone Gap, Va.; Mrs. Luke Lamb, Duffield, Va.; and Mrs. Robert Sallie, Duffield, Va.; six brothers, E. B. of Big Stone Gap, Va.;J. E., W. R., I. N., F.I. Upchurch, all of Kingsport, and J. D. Upchurch of Camp Claiborne, La. Sergeant Upchurch was a member of the Baptist Church of Duffield, Va. The body of T5 Charlie B. Upchurch, who was killed in France, September 23, 1944, will arrive at Speers Ferry, Va., Tuesday at 3:03 p.m. T5 Upchurch, who was 24 at the time of his death, was reared in Duffield, Va., and entered the service in March, 1942. He served with the 6th Armored Division. He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Upchurch, Duffield; his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Upchurch, Duffield, and one son, Charles, Jr., Big Stone Gap, Va.; six brothers, Ike, Floyd, Will and Edgar, all of Kingsport, J. D., Duffield, and Elmer, Big Stone Gap; and four sisters, Mrs. Luke Lamb and Mrs. Robert Sallee, both of Duffield, Mrs. James Roach, East Stone Gap, and Mrs. Ray Bailey, Big Stone Gap. His rank is listed as CPL on the memorial. The obituary information refers to him being SSGT. Perhaps he was promoted posthumously? He was originally buried in France (Nancy), and four years later was brought back to his home to rest eternally.
