Capt Rodolph "Judge" Crandall
Learn about upgrading this memorial...
Birth: Feb. 19, 1832
Lewis County
New York, USA
Death: Oct. 23, 1922
Washington County
Oregon, USA

Married: Elizabeth Owen Shannon on 12-8-1865 in Spring Island, Blue Earth Co., Minnesota
Rodolph was one of eight sons of Joseph and Mary Clarke Crandall. His Civil War service was only part of a long and dedicated career in public service, serving in the legislature, as a Justice of the Peace, and later as the first Circuit Judge for Washington co Or, along with serving two terms as Mayor of Hillsboro OR. Rodolph was community and civic minded, and worked to beautify the city of Hillsboro Or by paying subscription for, traveling to pick up, and planting trees along the downtown streets among other activities. Rodolph kept a diary that still is in existance. From him we learn stories and details of the family during his lifetime. His name was on the cornerstone of the Hillsboro courthouse and the enclosed time capsule was opened at the time of the old buildings destruction and rebuilding, and his picture was one of the items found inside. Rodolph is a brother to my ancestress Lydia Crandall Collins, and as Justice of the peace he performed the marriage ceremony for Lydias daughter, my 2x ggramma Evelett Collins who was Rodolphs niece. It was nice to see his signature and handwriting in the old marriage books of Washington co Or, and as a Circuit Judge there must be other documents to be examined. There are two known photos of Rodolph.
