Thomas Gamble Pitcher

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Rockport, Indiana, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1845, was commissioned an officer in the 5th US Infantry and served in the Mexican War. With the start of the Civil War, he was Major and served in the defense of Harper's Ferry in June, 1862. At the Battle of Cedar Mountain, August 9, 1862, he was severely wounded and was removed from further field service. Returning to active service in January 1863, he served as Provost Marshal for several districts and on duty as commissary for the remainder of the war. He was brevetted Brigadier General in the Regular Army on 13 March, 1865. After the war, he served as superintendent of the US Military Academy and retired in June 1878. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
