Emma's father Elpedio, was a coal miner, working in Cumberland Wyoming. (Years later Emma tried to visit Cumberland, and when asking a local for directions was asked, "Why would you want to go THERE???" There is nothing left of the town.) She was named after the anarchist Emma Goldman.

The family moved to San Francisco after Elpedio was injured in a mining accident. Emma was forced to drop out of school and work in a laundry when she was a teen.

Joe Lang was a Cable Car operator in San Francisco, and Emma road his car home from work every day. They were married in 1938. They had two children. They divorced when the children were little.

She dated Wilfred (Bill) Zeidler for many years but did not remarry until her youngest turned 18. Emma and Will remained married until Bill's passing in 1989. Emma remained in San Francisco until she moved into an assisted living facility in Petaluma. Emma's health declined, diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and died in 2000.

Emma was an amazing cook, taking after her mother. Her holiday dinners were the stuff of legend. She loved music, and to sing. When she was a teen, she was asked to sing on the radio in San Francisco, but her mother would not allow it.
