During the Battle of Olustee, Susan Livingston Hartridge, together with friends and some of their slaves, went out to the battlefield and bandaged many of the wounded soldiers, Northern and Southern. When some of her friends chided her for caring for the enemy soldiers, she reprimanded they by saying - "In time of suffering, I know no North nor South," and continued her humanitarian work.
Mrs. Hartridge was President of the Confederate Home Association and when Martha Reid Chapter, No. 19, United Daughters of the Confederacy was organized in 1892, she was a charter member and became its first president. Her name is No. 1 on the original Florida UDC Roll.
Mrs. Hartridge called the first convention of the Florida Division, UDC and having refused its presidency, suggested that Mrs. Edwin Gardner Weed, wife of Bishop Weed, fill that post, which she did for two terms. Later Mrs. Weed became the 5th President General of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
