Twelve year-old Genevieve was one of six victims of the fire that gutted the Germantown Community Centre, Haines and Morton Streets in the heart of Germantown's Little Italy district.
She was one of five girls who were trapped on the third-floor metal balcony of the Centre, engulfed by flames and smoke. The balcony was enclosed by wire mesh which, incidentally, was designed to keep the children from falling into the street.
By the time the firefighters cut through the mesh, the damage had been done. One girl, Frances Pifani, was dead before she reached Germantown Hospital. Genevieve and the other four girls would die over the course of the next two days.
Thousands of people went to the victims' homes to pay their last respects and thousands more lined the streets of Chelten Avenue in Germantown for the girls' funerals.
The other five victims of the fire were Francis Pifani, Sylvia Bressi, Mary Dima, Mary Di Tommaso, and Ida Visco.
