George Herbert Walker Bush
Birth: Jun. 12, 1924
Norfolk County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Still Living

41st United States President. The father of the 43rd United States President George W. Bush, he served as United States President from 1989 to 1993. His administration was highlighted by the Gulf War (1990 to 1991) against Iraq for the liberation of Kuwait, and by an economic recession. Born George Herbert Walker Bush in Milton, Massachusetts, his father was US Senator Prescott Bush, and he took on responsibility early as a student leader at Phillips Academy, in Andover, Massachusetts. On his 18th birthday, during World War II, he enlisted into the United States Navy, becoming a torpedo bomber pilot. He flew 58 missions in the Pacific Theater during the war, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor in action. In January 1945, he married the former Barbara Pierce, and they would have six children: George, Robin, John (also known as Jeb), Neil, Marvin and Dorothy. After the war, he attended Yale University, where he excelled in sports and studies, becoming captain of the baseball team and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Upon graduation, he started on a career in the oil industry in West Texas. Like his father, he developed an interest in politics and served two terms as Representative in Congress, and then ran unsuccessfully for the Senate. Over the years, he was appointed to a number of high-level federal positions, including Ambassador to the United Nations, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Chief Liaison Officer to the People's Republic of China, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1980, he ran for the Republican nomination for United States President, but lost to Ronald Reagan, and Reagan selected him as his Vice Presidential running mate. When President Reagan left off in 1988, Bush ran for the Presidency and won the 1988 election, defeating Democrat Governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts. Within ten months of taking office, the Berlin Wall fell, and within two years, the Eastern European governments shook off their communist governments to establish mostly democratic governments. In 1989, Bush sent American troops into the Republic of Panama to overthrow the corrupt regime of General Manuel Noriega, and in 1990, American troops were sent to defend Saudi Arabia when Iraq invaded its neighbor, Kuwait and threatened to invade Saudi Arabia. In 1991, a coalition of nations led by the United States attacked Iraqi troops occupying Kuwait, liberating it in 100 hours of intense ground fighting. Despite unprecedented popularity from this diplomatic and military triumph, he was unable to withstand unrest at home from an economic recession, and rising crime and violence in the inner cities, and he lost his bid for reelection in 1992 to Democrat William Jefferson Clinton. After the election, he retired to his home in Texas, where he remained semi-active in political affairs, taking on the role of an elder statesman, and assisting in national and international affairs on a limited basis.
