LOUISVILLIAN DIES OF VIETNAM BATTLE WOUNDS - Marine Lance Cpl. James Bryan Smith, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Leo Smith of 1813 Kingsford Drive, died at noon Wednesday in the Bethesda, Md., Naval Hospital of injuries received in Vietnam combat. For his courageous action and injuries received in fighting March 26 in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam, Smith was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a 1968 graduate of Bishop David High School, where he was a star football player. Other survivors include three sisters, Miss Elaine Smith, Mrs. John C. Ficks III and Mrs. Joseph P. Wathen; six brothers, J. Bruce Smith, a twin; and William L., Richard H., Michael E., Charles Anthony and David Leo Smith; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Joe Lee Mattingly, of Lebanon, Ky. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 1925 Lewiston Drive, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. The body will be at Owen Suburban Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, after 5 p.m. today. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Commission for Handicapped Children.
