Western Pioneer. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, after serving as a Paymaster in the US Army during the Mexican American War, he with companions left to build a new settlement in the mid west. Settling in the Omaha Indian Territory of Nebraska, he established a farm in 1854 and was a founding member of the Omaha Claim Club. He was real estate agent for the area and built the first bank building in the city named Omaha after the Omaha Indians. He became a fixture to the city and was a major investor in the Nebraska Ferry Company which was the foremost ferry company in Omaha for more than 25 years. In March 1857, he was elected first Mayor of the City of Omaha and served one term.
