Edward's parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1844 and on May 21st that year they left Canada and traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, where they boarded a steamer and went up the Missouri River to Mormon Grove, leaving there on June 18, 1855 in an oxen-pulled wagon to cross the plains to Utah. His mother, Julia Ann, died of cholera while in Iowa and his two brothers, George and Cyrenius, died soon after. They were all buried along the trail.

The family spent the first year in Provo and then moved to Payson where Edward Alma was sent to live with the James McClellan family. Here he learned to work with cattle and horses and loved to ride broncos and steers. As he grew older he did much freighting, often to the mines at Pioche, Nevada.

He married Mary Almeda McClellan and built a home in Payson. In 1876 he moved the family to Grass Valley where he settled in Greenwich and built a small log house. He obtained six hundred acres of farm and meadow land. At one time the family milked 50 cows and made cheese which was taken north for sale or trade. Edward was a good story-teller and loved parties and dances. He also had a good singing voice.

In 1880 Edward and Mary took their family to St. George and had them sealed to them. In 1885 he took a second wife, Christina Torgersen, and in December of that year he left for a mission. He served for a year and then returned home after contracting malaria.

In 1887 he took Mary and her family to Mexico where they stayed for a year. About this time the Federal marshals were arresting men who practiced polygamy and Edward had horses that could jump fences and the Feds couldn't catch him.

Mary died on October 27, 1889 and Christina raised Mary's family with her own. Edward was set apart as Bishop of the Koosharem Ward in December of 1900. He served for fourteen years. He was a soldier in the Black Hawk War and he was loved by the Indians of Grass Valley.

Edward Alma died on May 28, 1929 after suffering a stroke. He was 82 years old. Christina lived for 26 more years and served the people of the valley and her family. She died on September 25, 1958.
