Carl Alton Brown,age 85,passed away Friday,April 20,2012 in Dunnellon,Florida.Surviving is his wife,Della Duncan Brown,sister,Rose Ellen Brown Anderson;and six brothers,Herbert Rowley Brown,Bartie Joe Brown,Willie Robert Brown,John Edrie Brown,James Leroy Brown,and David Carroll Brown.He was predeceased by his parents,two sisters,Marjorie Ellenor Brown Stokes and Frances Lucille Brown,and three brothers,Walter Eugene Brown,Jesse Dean Brown,and Paul Edward Brown.Alton the oldest out of thirteen children,was born October 17,1926 in Greenville,SC to Carl Thurston Brown and Willie Eloise Hudson Brown.He grew up in Greenville and Taylors.He was drafted at the age 18,but WW11 ended before he could be deployed overseas and he returned to South Carolina to attend business college in 1948,Alton went back in the Army and served until 1952,having served in Korea and Japan.He received the Bronze Star for his meritorious service during the Korean Conflict and other awards.He then went to the University of South Carolina,afterward pursuing a career in money management and accounting with USAA and IBM.On April 23,1960 Alton married Della Lee Duncan and they were married for 52 years.
Alton was a Christian who loved his family.He devoted much time to genealogical research and shared information willingly with all.He is particularly known for his research on the descendants of William Brown whose will was recorded in 1823 in Greenville County.After he retired with his wife to Florida,Alton and his cousin Louise Brown Heffner of Jacksonville,Fl published a book on this family,William Brown,SR And Some Of His Descendants in 1994.They also published 376 page book on the Tollison Family called "Climbing The Tollison Tree" in the late 1990's Copies of these books are in the Greenville Library.There will be a Memorial Service at the New Convenant Fellowship in Greer on Saturday May the 5th at 4:00 PM.
