Charles Windsor Auten, Sr. 79, of Belmond, CA, a native of Kellogg and former resident of Grinnell, Long Island, NY, Ft Worth, TX, died Saturday, July 4, at a St. Joseph, MO hospital.
A memorial service was held later at his home church, Pleasant View United Methodist church rural Kellogg, on September 6, 1987, for Windsor and his wife Ruth (Saunders) Auten and their cremains were scattered over the Rocky Mountains where Windsor loved to hunt deer and elk. He and Ruth are memorialized on the family tombstone at the Slagel cemetery in Buena Vista Twp in Iowa.
The son of Frank M. and Susie Mae Morris Auten, he was born on September 17, 1907 in rural Kellogg. He attended rural school south of Kellogg and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1926. He played football and basketball at Grinnell.
On September 22, 1926, he was married to Ruth Saunders, also a Grinnell High School graduate. He farmed with his father and brother Jay until the spring of 1929 when he and his wife moved to Berea, Ohio, where he began work in aviation for American Airlines as a mechanic. He had worked in Cleveland, Long Island, N.Y., Fort Worth, TX and San Francisco, advancing to supervisory positions. He received his 40-year honor and retired in 1972.
Mr. Auten had been in declining health and on kidney dialysis for several years. He had been living at the home of his son Dick in Dearborn, MO, at the time of his death.
Survivors include two sisters, Anne Lois Reynolds and Margaret Beveridge, both of Middletown, CT; brothers Bert of Newton, and Gene of Kellogg; two sons, Charles Windsor Jr of Denton, TX, and Carl Richard of Dearborn, MO; nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in January 1987, and two brothers Jay in 1980 and Melvin in October, 1944, of Kellogg.
