Risden enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 25 March 1862 at Albermarle, North Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company I, 52nd North Carolina Infantry on 28 April 1862 at Camp Mangum. At enlistment he was described as 18 years old, a farmer, 5 feet 8.5 inches tall and born in Stanley County, North Carolina. Risden was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 5 July 1863 and sent to Camp Letterman United States Army General Hospital in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He died at hospital on 25 September 1863 due to fractured left femur. He was buried at hospital cemetery, grave #25 and exhumed after the war and re-interred at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina. (bio by Martha Reid 19 UDC)
