Marie A. Souza, 97, of New Bedford died at home Thursday, Dec. 14, 2005.
Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maria A. (Botelho) Souza. She was a lifelong resident of the city and a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.
She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1927 and from North Adams Normal School in 1929. She later received a master's degree from Bridgewater State Teachers College and a certificate of advanced study in speech and hearing in Boston.
She taught at the Oxford School in Fairhaven from 1929-33. She later was principal of the Acushnet Avenue School in New Bedford and moved to the Jireh Swift School, from which she retired in 1970.
She was a member of the St. Luke's Auxiliary.
Survivors include a nephew and godchild, William S. Souza, and his wife, Mildred, of Rochester; five great-nephews and great-nieces; and four great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was the sister of the late Manuel Souza and Anthony Souza.
Her funeral Mass will be at 930 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County St.
