William Wallace Crawford
1842-1924
Confederate - Arkansas

William Crawford was born on May 10, 1842 in Washington county Arkansas in Marrs Hill. He had two brothers and four sisters. His father passed away when he was only eight.

Crawford enlisted on November 2nd, 1861 in Fayetteville Arkansas where he was mustered into Company H of the 15th regiment of the Arkansas Infantry. The name was later changed to the Northwest Arkansas Infantry to avoid confusion with another regiment of a similar name.
William began as a private but was later promoted to Corporal.

This regiment fought in numerous, vicious, bloody battles and often came out on the losing end. One of the first was at Wilson's Creek, Mo. and later at Pea Ridge which was a decisive loss and led to Union control of Missouri for two years. They also fought in major battles at Corinth, Ms (union victory), Hatchie Bridge and Port Gibson Ms, also Union victories. They also fought in the bloody battle of Vicksburg against a Union army led by Ulysses S Grant. There were 37,532 casualties with 32,697 of them being Confederate.

After somehow surviving these battles (also no record of him being wounded) he returned to Arkansas after the war and married his wife Catherine in 1870. Sometime after that they moved to Texas where they had four daughters.
In 1892 they moved to Indian Territory and by 1900 he and his family were living in Noble, where he was a farmer. By 1910 they had moved to the Wynnewood area where he also farmed. William passed away on October 8, 1924 and is buried at the Oaklawn cemetery in Wynnewood. It was also noted that he was a Presbyterian.
