Mrs. Handy was the daughter of Christopher David and Christina Betzner. The couple were born, grew up, married, and had six children in Wurttemberg before emigrating to the US in 1880. Elizabeth was barely a year old at the time. Another daughter was born within a year of their arrival in Detroit.
In 1908, Elizabeth met and married George C. Handy. They had two children. As well, she had at least eight nieces and nephews and assorted cousins. Other family members had immigrated as well.
