Steven Alan McCraw passed away Sunday, November 27, 2016 at his home in Memphis after a valiant three-year battle with cancer. He was 58 years old. Steve was born in Memphis on February 17, 1958. He attended Saint Anne Catholic School, Messick High School and the University of Memphis. He was a talented guitarist, sound engineer, photographer and programmer who led a full and varied professional life. He was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Steve's generosity of spirit touched many, and he made and influenced friends everywhere he worked-working in The Commercial Appeal Sports Department; working in music stores including Berl Olswanger, Strings & Things and Pro-Audio; and as a live sound engineer for numerous local bands and performers as well as national acts. At Conference Technologies Inc., he was a gifted programmer, working on control systems for corporate, government, healthcare and non-profit clients across the country. But his number one passion was music and the guitar. He performed as a member of multiple area bands including everyman, the Cut Outs, Good Question, Work Release and Tuscon Simpson. His body of work included numerous commercial recordings. The Memphis music community is overflowing with his friends, fans and admirers who are mourning the loss of their friend. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Leigh Bynum McCraw; his mother, Anna Laney McCraw; one brother, Gary McCraw (Leah); three sisters, Mary Anne McCraw Haraway , Jeannette McCraw Keath (John), and Kathleen McCraw, all of Memphis. He also leaves behind two nephews, Chris McCraw and Gibson Bynum; and four nieces, Sarah Keath, Lauren McCraw, Laura Petrus and Sadie Bynum. He is preceded in death by his father, L. Eugene McCraw. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of The Jones Clinic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, MusiCares or the animal rescue organization of your choice. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6 at St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, 700 Poplar Avenue. Memphis Funeral Home, Memphis TN (Obituary published by Memphis Funeral Home)
