Gale served as a helicopter pilot with the rank of Warrant Officer 1 in the Army with the 114th Assault Helicopter Company, 214th Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade. He was ten days into his tour of duty when he flew as a crew member (along with seven other men) on 66-16871; the helicopter came under hostile fire and crashed into the Mekong River in Kien Phong (now Ðồng Tháp) Province. He is listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (Panel 14W, Row 11).
