Born in Maury Co, TN in 1807, Eli was a son of Hickman Hensley and Elizabeth Rentfrow. He was first married supposedly to Elizabeth Langley and second to a widow Mrs. Eliza Ann Brewer (possibly one and the same?)Eli Rentfrow spelled his name with a "w" however, his tombstone purchased several years after his death does not include the "w." His mother, Elizabeth Rentfrow, used the "w" as did his son, Eli, however, son Daniel Newton (Tuck), spelled his last name, Rentfro, without the "w."

Eli and his brothers Thomas Jefferson Rentfrow, Matt (James Matorson)Rentfrow, Jesse Rentfrow, John Rentfrow, and Joseph Rentfrow settled in Summit Township. They settled in the Little Wabash bottom, a short distance north of where Ewington was later established. They settled in an abandoned Indian camp until they were able to build cabins up on the hill near a spring which provided them fresh water. They tapped sugar trees to make sugar, cleared ground and planted corn and cotton. They pounded the corn to make bread and hominy. The brothers hunted for turkeys which were plentiful in the area.
Eli's 1st marriage was to Eliza Langley in 1827 and they had 6 children: Malinda Ellen, Thomas J., James M., George W., Elizabeth (Betty), Mary Caroline.
Eli's 2nd marriage was to Elizabeth Ann Brewer. She had also been previously married. They had 2 children: Eli (Jr.) and Daniel Newton (Tuck).
