1862-1863 Civil War: Enlisted on Sep 30, 1862 in Company A, 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Mustered out July 17, 1863 at Portland. Enlisted for 9 months but 300 members agreed to extend their enlistment due to the impending invasion - Gettysburg Campaign (defense of Washington). When Colonel Wentworth delivered the message to Secretary Stanton, he was informed that "Medals of Honor would be given to that portion of the regiment that volunteered to remain" These medals were later purged by Congress' Medal of Honor Review Board in 1917 as the actions of the regiment did not meet the criteria for receiving such a medal.
