Claude was educated in the Bloomingdale School in Clay County, South Dakota. In 1902 he was married to Effa Palmer in Vermillion. They lived in South Dakota all of their lives except for a short time spent on the West Coast. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Degree of Honor lodge. His hobby was woodworking and fishing, and he was an upholsterer and cabinet maker by profession.
