WINTON D. BASTON, SR., age 77 of Hendersonville, was born on April 30, 1933 and passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 after a lengthy battle with cancer and pulmonary disease.

Mr. Batson was a graduate of Hume Fogg High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956 at Connelly AFB in Waco, TX. He received his BS in Social Work from Middle Tennessee State University in 1959, and his Masters in Social Work from the University of Tennessee in 1964. Mr. Batson served as assistant Director of the Metropolitan Welfare Commission, Director of Social Services for Vanderbilt Medical Center, and consultant to Hillhaven Convalescent Center. He retired as Director of Social Services for Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara Davenport Batson and Robert Baxter Batson of Clarksville, TN; brothers, Richard, George and Robert, Jr. He is survived by sons, the Rev. Winton (Wynn) Batson, Jr. (Joni) of Hendersonville, Cliff Batson (Barbara Carter) of Franklin; daughter, Cindie Batson Carden (David) of Knoxville; five grandchildren; sister, Elnora Batson Perryman (Ray) of Mt. Juliet; and brother, Harold Batson (Brenda) of Nashville.
