Birth: Apr. 12, 1923
Lake Village
Chicot County
Arkansas, USA
Death: Jul. 31, 2001

BAKER JOSEPH was born to James and Alberta Baker in Lake Village, Arkansas on April 12, 1923. He bade farewell to us on July 31, 2001. His job was finished and he was at peace. Joe grew up in Lake Village, Arkansas where he received his formal education. He moved to Oakland in the early 1940's. For the last 38 years he resided in Berkeley with his family. He was a social being who did not let his physical limitations confine him or define who he was. He loved life. He loved people. He had varied interests: photography; history buff; civil war history enthusiast; the world and all of its people - their races, cultures and religions; a proponent of self-help for education, progress and development in the Black community. Joe worked for a number of years as a bus driver for Key System/AC Transit and retired as a machinist from Naval Air Station, Alameda after 25 years. For his family he carried many titles and played many roles. He was always there for them. Someone was always at the end of his advice - needed or unneeded. Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Alberta Baker; his daughter, Ericka Elaine Baker; sister- cousin Ethel Lemon. Memories of life with Joseph will be cherished by his beloved and devoted wife of 37 years, Patricia; father, James Baker; mother-in-law, Vernelle Wright; children: Glen Baker, Denise Baker, Gregory and Danice Baker, Iris and Marshall Grace, Nikki Baker, Cheryle Mark; grandchildren: Daillo Neal, Rashid Woodland, Alexis Grace, Myles Grace, Morgan Grace; great-grandchildren: Daillo (Jr.) and Diarra Neal; sister-cousins: Jessie Price, Mary Louise Baker, Ocie Smiley. Hmegoing celebration will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at the Ollie Grove Baptist Church, 2800 Mabel (corner of Oregon & Mabel), Berkeley, CA. Interment will be at Rolling Hills Memorial Park, Richmond, CA. Visitation hours are 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 at Harris Funeral Home, 1331 San Pablo Avenue Berkeley, CA.
