Ella is the daughter of William Alexander Rodgers and Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Long. She was born in the Dunklin township of Greenville county, SC.

She married Jesse Davenport McCuen and they are the parents of Roy Leslie McCuen, Boyce Harold McCuen, Sr, Ralph McCuen and Jesse Vasco McCuen. Ella's husband, Jesse, died in a cotton mill accident in GA and their son, Ralph, died the following year when a rock he'd tossed into the air struck him on the head. Ella and her remaining sons moved to FL briefly where she gave birth to Lois Christine, whose father is unknown, but said to have been a police officer.

Ella then moved her children to SC and married Frank Davis, an older widower. She and Frank Davis are the parents of William Frank Davis, Jr., Marga Davis and Marion Davis. At the time of her death she was the oldest surviving widow of an insurrectionist veteran in SC. Frank Davis was her second husband and she his second wife.

According to her grandson, William G McCuen, MD, the Davises owned a farm 12 miles outside of Greenville on the Anderson Road. They had a well and an indoor toilet but no electricity early on. They used kerosene lanterns. They farmed their own acreage with mules pulling the plow and raised a dairy cow and chickens. Their crops included cotton. She churned butter. They used a wood stove for cooking and fireplaces for heat and kept perishable foods in an icebox. They slept on straw filled ticks topped with feather mattresses. They had a piano on which Ella played hymns. She attended church at Pisgah Baptist. She and her children were literate. Attached at left is a sketch of the back entrance of their home as recalled by him many years later.
