Oronogo, Mo., May 6---John J. Surface, 81 years old, a lifelong resident of Oronogo, died at 10:55 o'clock this morning at his home here. He had been ill three weeks.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Surface; three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Misner of Pittsburg, Mrs. Hazel McPhail and Mrs. Faye Ritter, both of Oronogo; three sons, Charles Surface and John Surface of Oronogo and Fred Surface of Webb city; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral serivces will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the residence. Burial will be in Weaver Cemetery.

Jake was my maternal greatgrandfather. He was very close to my mother Lorraine, his granddaughter. Jake came to Oronogo with his parents from Indiana in a covered wagon in 1868.

He was a coal miner at the old American Davey near Johnstown and a blacksmith in Oronogo and Carterville area.
