Detective Frank Maynard,a six-year employee of the Dyersburg Police Department, was killed early this morning in a gun battle with a man suspected of firebombing the Federal Building.

Maynard, 33, was killed instantly when a slug from a 30.06 penetrated the drivers side of his patrol car as he attempted to back the vehicle away from the firing suspect at approzximately 1:a.m. this morning.

John W.Criswell, a former Dyersburg resident was apprehended in a cab stand shortly after the shooting as two patrol cars converged on the scene.

Police Chief Bob Williamson said that Maynard had been in pursuit of Criswell, when he turned left off of Market at Church and radioed that he was being shot at. He said that Criswell who was driving a late model Vega, jumped out of his car and fired a shot from the high power rifle through the windshield of the patrol car.

Williamson said that Maynard apparently fired two shots through the windshield at the suspect and failing to hit him, attempted to back the patrol car out of range, when he was struck in the left side by a bullet which penetrated the metal of the door.
