Mrs. Mary J. Spensley, 93, Passes Away at Her Home Here

Mrs. Mary J Spensley, widow of John Spensley, and Dubuque's oldest native-born resident, died at her home, 340 Wartburg Place, Friday morning at 9:40 o'clock. She was in her ninety-fourth year and had been in ill health for the past several months.
Mrs. Spensley was the daughter of Robert and Maria Waller, pioneer residents of Dubuque, was born in Rockdale, Dec 7, 1840.
She was the sister of Mrs. James Woodward, Mrs. William Coates and John Robert Waller, all of whom have preceded her in death.
In 1872, she was married at Hudersfield, England to John Spensley of Mineral Point, Wis., and went with him to Mineral Point to make her home. Four children were born to the marriage; Mary Alice, who died in infancy; Robert W., who died in 1909; and Harker B. and Maria who survive their mother.
Mr. Spensley died in San Antonio, Texas in 1882. Mrs. Spensley continued to maintain her residence in Mineral Point until 14 years ago, at which time she returned to Dubuque to make her home with her sister, Mrs Woodward.
Besides her son and daughter, there survive four grandchildren, Anne, Mary Alice, Georgette and Harker Brentnal Spensley, Jr. Dubuque, and the following nieces and nephews; Mrs. George Kiesel and Frank W. Coates, Dubuque; Mrs. Charles Long, Rock Island, Ill; John Robert Waller and Austin Cooper Waller, Washington, D.C.
A woman of stately mien and gracious personality, Mrs. Spensley was the center of a circle of devoted relatives and friends. Although her deepest interests were always bound up in her family, her church and charities, she maintained to the end of her life a great interest in public affairs.
Funeral services will be held at the family home, 340 Wartburg Place, Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, at Mineral Point, Wis.
