James was born and raised in Johnson County, Missouri. He lived in the area of Warrensburg until he was 16 then moved to Higginsville. He served in the United States Army from 1960-1962. After leaving the service, he went to Independence, MO and lived there for over 40 years. He retired from Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in 1992.
James was active in his church and a diligent family researcher. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution through his ancestor, Capt. Christopher Houston. James was an active member and past president of the Jackson County Genealogy Society and a long-time volunteer at the Jackson County Genealogy Library aiding others in their research.
James is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carol; two sons & daughters-in-law, Brian Houston, and Brent & Emily Houston; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda & Randy Stallings; two grandchildren; a brother, David Collier Houston; 6 sisters, Ruth Richey, Margaret Bond, Lois Judd, Helen Couch, Zella Bright, and Wanda Heyer. James was preceeded in death by his parents, Rev. Willard Leverett and Ida May (Long) Houston and a brother, John Robert Houston.
