"JACK" MEVICH, EARLY SETTLER DIES AT HOME IN LEWELLEN; FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY.

One of the largest funerals that has been held in the county took place Monday, April 6th, when between 300 and 400 people looked for the last time on the face of one of Garden county's successful early pioneers, John Mevich, who died Friday, April 3, at his home in Lewellen from symptoms of influenza and over-exertion while branding stock several days previous to his death.

John Mevich was born October 3, 1861 [sic], at Kenosha, Wis. He spent his boyhood days in Moneral, Ill. He came to Nebraska with many other early pioneers and successfully won the battle against the hardships of the early western life. He selected a homestead in Garden county, Nebraska, where he resided until about 1915, when he with his family, moved to Lewellen where he passed away April 3, 1925, at the age of 64 years and 6 months.

Deceased was united in marriage to Miss Grace White, March 31, 1390, to which union was born two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Morris of Oshkosh, Nebraska, and Miss Charlotte Mevich of Lewellen, Nebraska, who with his wife, Mrs. Grace Mevich, of Lewellen, Nebraska; three sisters, Mrs. May Forest of Henry, Ill., and Mrs. Katherine Frisby of Madelia, Minn., and Mrs. Cotten of Chicago, Ill., as well as a host of other relatives and friends whose number cannot be computed, are left to mourn his sudden departure.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church Monday afternoon and the remains were laid at rest in the Ash Hollow cemetery, Rev. C. M. Esterbrook officiating at the last sad rites of this worthy pioneer.
