Louis was born in the city of Heilbronn, Wurttemberg (Germany) in 1848. He came to America aboard the passenger ship SS Donau in 1872, arriving on October 5. At the time of the 1880 census he was a laborer on the farm of Jerome Petty in Liberty Township, Putnam County, Missouri. He married Julia Wood in 1887 and they raised 6 children while in Missouri - Jessie, Luella, Elta, Charles, Otto, and Fred. Otto passed away in 1893. Louis and his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa in about 1896 before the birth of their last child, Emma Nina, in 1899.

Louis spent most of his life as a laborer. In 1897 he worked for the National Starch Manufacturing Company in the Chesterfield area of Des Moines. In 1900 he was a janitor at the Youngerman Block, a 7-story office building at the northwest corner of 5th and Mulberry.

In about 1914, Louis, his wife Julia and their youngest children Fred and Nina moved to Floyd County, Iowa, where Louis and Fred worked as farmhands in Riverton Township. The family later moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where Louis passed away in 1918.
