James was the son of Henry VanBenschoten and Eva Eliza Walker, 1861-1885.
James and Rachel Henion VanBenschoten also had a son, James, who was born and died in Ramsey, Bergen, New Jersey on 13 May 1920.

James started Boy Scout Troop 31 in the 1920’s. It is the longest still active Bot Scout Troop in the USA. The Boulder Monument was erected by the Boy Scouts of America in honor of his commitment to Scouting.
