Nolan during WWII was part of the 8th Army Air Corp, flying over 40 missions in B-17 bombers. He was awarded three bronze star medals for combat missions. He married Ellen Gifford on June 24, 1950 in Denver, CO. They moved to Longmont in 1962. He worked as a chemist at the Rocky Flats Plant for over 30 years. He was a member of the Littleton Gem and Mineral Club. He was a rock hound, collector of rocks, minerals and gemstones and enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Ellen.

He is survived by his two daughters LaRae Perry of Longmont and Barbara West of Ft. Collins, CO, three grandchildren Meredith Bowman and Justin West of Ft. Collins, and Erin Anderson of Steamboat Springs, CO, brother Dale Moody of Denver and sister Beverly Breda of Lakewood.
