Mary Irene Moffitt, aged 74, of Columbus, passed away March 8, 2006 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She was born September 3, 1931, in Altoona, PA. She was preceded in death by her father Herbert R. Moffitt and mother Irene Botterell Moffitt. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception church. She is the beloved mother of Shawna Moffitt and grandmother of Lindsey Moffitt of Columbus. Mary Irene earned her B.A. from Chatham College, M.A. from University of Wisconsin, and her Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. She was the former Director of Women's Services at OSU, and Director of Continuing Education and Evening Services at OSU. She was one of the first women's sports reporters for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. She enjoyed teaching for the Columbus Public Schools, ABLE/GED program and freelance writing and editing for various magazines and newspapers. She will be remembered for love of words, ideas, and her passion for raising awareness of social and racial injustices. Memorial Mass will be held Saturday 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 414 E. N. Broadway, followed by a reception for family and friends in the Community Hall of the church.
