Dr. Robert Davis Ludwig, 84, resident of Palm Desert, Calif. and former resident of Grand Rapids, Mich., passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at Desert Hospital following a short illness. "Bob" was born March 26, 1927 in Grand Rapids. He graduated from Union High School and started Grand Rapids Junior College before joining the U.S. Navy in 1945. Following discharge, he enrolled at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. After graduation and during the Korean Conflict, Bob went back into the Navy for two years. Thereafter, he returned to Grand Rapids where he established and maintained a dental practice for thirty years. Bob retired from dentistry in 1984 and with his wife moved to the Coachella Valley. He led a very active retirement that included personal participation in music, art, golf and travel. A lifelong musician, he studied the French horn again and played with the San Jacinto and Coachella Valley Symphony Orchestras. Bob was an accomplished rock sculptor. Over a period of fifteen years, he sculpted seventy-three major works, often giving them as special gifts to friends and relatives. Bob was a member of Mission Hills Country Club where he played golf several times a week. At one point, he was a "scratch" golfer. In recent years he was proud to "shoot his age" which he often did. He and his wife also traveled widely. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; daughters, Sally Ludwig and husband Chris Mills; Laye Mentley and husband Marc; and Sara Mindell; sons, John and wife Carla; Peter and wife Mary; and youngest son, Daniel. He also had 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by step-daughter, Beth Langland. Bob also leaves a half brother, Howard Davis; as well as many friends from around the country who loved and respected him. Two services are planned in the Palm Springs area on Friday, April 29, 2011. At 1:00 PM, a service of internment will be held at the Coachella Valley Cemetery, 82925 Avenue 52 (at Jackson Street) in Coachella. Beginning at 3:00 PM, a Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at Weifels Palm Springs Mortuary, 690 S. Vella Road, Palm Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Robert D.
