Professional Motorcycle Racer. Born Nicholas Patrick Hayden in Owensboro, Kentucky, Nicky Hayden professionally raced motorcycles on both dirt and paved circuits. Road racing was Hayden's specialty where he would win the 1999 AMA Supersport Championship and the 2002 AMA Superbike Championship in the United States. Internationally, Hayden was most famously known for winning the MotoGP World Championship in 2006. He was a winner on dirt as well with his best year being in 2002 where he won two races at Springfield Short Track, Springfield TT, and the famed Peoria TT. His win at the Peoria TT came after beating thirteen-time winner of the Peoria TT, Chris Carr, despite Hayden starting from the penalty line. In 2003 he left the United States to race full time in the MotoGP series where he joined the fabled Repsol Honda stable where he won Rookie-of-the-Year honors. His MotoGP career was capped with winning the series championship in 2006. Following a somewhat disappointing 2015 season, it was announced that Hayden would run in the Superbike World Championship for the 2016 season. In his first full season in the Superbike World Championship, he won one race at Malaysia, finished on the podium a total four times, and finished fifth in the overall season standings. Hayden died from injuries suffered when he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle following a race at Imola, Italy.
