Mary Ann Bates was one of the four wives married to Arizona Mormon pioneer, Edmund Lovell Ellsworth, and was the mother of 13 of his 42 children. She was one of the converts that Edmund Ellsworth brought to America from England where he had been sent as a missionary for the Mormon Church. On the direction of Mormon leader Brigham Young, Edmund lead the converts on foot, and pulling handcarts filled with all their worldly belongings, from Ohio to Salt Lake City. Upon arrival, Edmund married two of the converts, Mary Ann Jones and Mary Ann Bates. In an effort to expand the church, Edmund was sent to Arizona in 1880 with other early Mormon pioneers. He brought with him the two wives mentioned above and settled in Show Low, Arizona. In 1884, Edmund was arrested for polygamy and served 60 days in the Yuma Territorial Prison. After his release he separated his families and moved Mary Ann Bates to Mesa, Arizona where she lived until her death in 1918. Edmund died in 1893 and is buried in the old Adair Cemetery near the town of Show Low.

An interesting side note is that three of Edmund's four wives were named Mary Ann and his first wife Elizabeth, was the oldest daughter of Mormon leader Brigham Young.
