Taft Evans, Sr.

Woodfin - William Taft Evans Sr., 96, of 33 Reese St., died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at the V. A. Medical Center following a period of declining health.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a veteran of the Navy, serving during World War II, and a former member of the American Legion. He retired in 1973 from Drexel Heritage Furniture after 20 years of service and he was formerly employed by Gordon Furniture Co. for 15 years.

Mr. Evans was the son of the late John N. and Dinah Davis Evans. He was also preceded in death by a son, Gerald Evans; a daughter, Shelby Jean Evans; and a brother, Ralph Evans.

Surviving are his wife, Alda Vearl Hollifield Evans; son, William T. Evans Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Woodfin; granddaughters, Deborah Ann Barker and Cynthia Lynn Green, both of Candler, and Sherri Gwen Blankenship of Waxaw; stepgrandson, Tranis Clark of Clyde; and 10 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Duvall officiating. Entombment will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

Memorials may be made to the Western Carolina Rescue Ministries, 225 Patton Ave., Asheville, NC 28801.
